Modernisation without a rewrite
Legacy systems are rarely best replaced wholesale. The big-bang rewrite is the most reliable way to spend two years arriving at feature parity with what you already had, minus the edge cases nobody documented but everybody depended on.
The usual route is to put a clean interface in front of the old system, move capability behind it a piece at a time, and retire the original once nothing depends on it.
